2016 Australian Junior Nationals – Race Report

By M.A.D 0

Over six hundred riders along with their families and support crews descended on Renmark S.A and the Riverland Junior Motorcycle club for the 2016 KTM Australian Junior Nationals.

The soft sand of Renmark combined with some of the heaviest downpours and storms in recent memory in SA left the riders and families having to endure everything from power outs to flooded tracks and pit tents, delayed and cancelled days of racing and surprisingly after the bad weather cleared we had some of the best racing seen at junior nationals in years.

The MAD Peter Stevens KTM junior development team entered with our three rider line up of Riley Findlay, Micheal Murphy and Josh Brewster competing across B/W 85cc, 125cc and 250cc classes.

Riley Findlay

 Class : 85cc 12-U16 years

 Position: 4th Overall

Riley Findlay competed in the younger B/W 85cc age group and showed fantastic speed from the start of the week with the third fastest time in his heat practice sessions. Qualifying did not go as smooth as Riley dealt with promising moto’s spoiled by Red Flagged motos and crashes. However come finals Riley findlay brought his A game to the table and gave everything he had, showing great speed and a huge improvement from his early season form. Running up front early in Motos one and three, Riley ran as high as third position for many laps and battled with the best junior riders in the country and even the world #2 85cc rider on his way to 6th, 8th and 5th position moto scores.

These results gave riley 4th overall in the 2016 Australian junior nationals championship, missing the podium by just a few points!

Micheal Murphy

85cc 14 – U16 years  Position – 4th

125cc 13-U15 years

Micheal Murphy showed flashes of brilliance from the outset of the 2016 junior nationals! With the second fastest time of his 125cc practice qualifying class, along with great speed on the 85cc bike, everything was running smoothly for rider and team. Micheal’s consistency and speed on the 85cc bike saw him outside of the top five only once out of a total of five finals, with a week highlight third position podium ride in the final moto. On the 125cc machine a week best 7th position moto score highlighted a tough week on the larger bike in the extremely rough conditions, but with a huge learning curve for Micheal who unbelievably was attending his first junior nationals and challenging for podiums in the championship!

Josh Brewster

Classes: 125cc 15 years & 250cc 15 years

Josh Brewster came into the week of junior nationals competing in the premier and most highly contested classes of the 2016 junior nationals. With a season long goal for Josh to improve towards the top ten at state level racing and top twenty at nationals, the team were happy with Josh who maintained his composure and commitment to his goals with solid qualifying races to easily make the finals in both classes. Josh came out swinging on the final days of racing to land a 15th in his first 125cc final and a 17th in the 250cc class final. With the top ten in each class being on full factory rides, Josh battled hard against the elite racers of the graduating classes who will be podium threats at MX Nationals level in 2017.

Unfortunately Josh tangled with a downed rider at the start of his second 125cc final and whilst on the ground was run over by an oncoming bike. Luckily no long term damage but a trip to the medics tent ruled him out of competition for the remainder of the week with a hematoma and impact bruising on his lower back. The team wishes Josh a speedy recovery and look forward to him competing in selected Supercross events later this year.
